Master Cleanse
It is important to give your digestive system and all internal organs a chance to relax and recharge each year. This cleanse will allow your body’s systems to do just that for 10 days, allowing them to work properly and at peak performance.
All information and procedures summarized for you can be found in The Master Cleanser by Stanley Burroughs, available for purchase ($6.50) at our Wilmington and Newark Empowered Yoga locations or any health food store or co-op. Developed by Burroughs in 1941, the cleanse has endured. It is most definitely not a fad diet. The MANY testimonials on the internet from people who have greatly benefited from the cleanse, sometimes referred to as "the lemonade diet", underscore its value. Burroughs was also the author of Healing for the Age of Enlightenment.
How the Cleanse works
Mix each ingredient into a drink that tastes like lemonade. Be aware that each ingredient has a purpose. Frequency of the drink increases the detoxification effect, so drink as much as you can, usually averaging 6-12 glasses daily for 10 days. The recipe to the right makes a 10 oz. serving.
Water
To nourish the cells and keep your body hydrated
Lemons
Helps loosen and break up mucus in the body. It is a powerful cleanser and high in vitamins.
Grade B Maple Syrup
One of the most balanced of all sugars; it will keep your sugar level balanced and keep you moving.
Cayenne Pepper
A blood vessel dilator, thermal warmer, and provider of vitamin A
NOTE: Exercise enhances the cleansing action of the program. If you feel well enough to exercise, DO IT!
After the first couple of days, exercise will be easier.
What to Expect
Some people experience minor discomforts like headaches, upset stomach, fatigue, or dizziness during the first few days. These will go away. The side effects occur as a result of your body detoxifying just as a drug addict would experience a de-tox. If you are aware of these side effects, stop to think about how many toxins are being stored in your body. It is beneficial to avoid caffeine (sodas, coffee, hot or cold tea) the week before starting the cleanse. You don’t want to have caffeine withdrawal added to the discomforts mentioned above.
Keep in mind
- You are doing this for your health. This is the BEST thing you can do to prevent cancer, ulcers, kidney infections, and other ailments. The bonus is that you will probably lose a pound for every day that you are on the cleanse.
- When people tell you that you are crazy for doing this, don’t listen. Encourage them and tell them that they could do it, too, if they just put their mind to it!
- When you are finished with the cleanse, you will feel more empowered than you’ve ever felt in your life. You are going to cleanse for 10 days. Many people have followed the plan over 40 days.
- Before you begin, dedicate yourself to the cleanse. The full 10 days are required to fully receive the benefits, particularly the last three days when your body is fully cleansing.
Coming off the Cleanse
Coming off the cleanse is just as important as being on it. Your intestinal tract and stomach will be very sensitive because the inner lining has been cleaned. Please follow the following recommendations:
- 1. Begin the 11th day with freshly squeezed orange juice. Allow yourself a good 20 minutes to drink 16 ounces because the enzymes released in your mouth have been shut down for 10 days. The more slowly you drink the juice the more time your body has to turn those enzymes back on.
- 2. For lunch have a bowl of Miso soup or organic vegetable broth with some organic vegetables.
- 3. Do the same for dinner.
- 4. The next day be mindful as you start to reintroduce healthy solid foods back into your eating. Chew your food thoroughly and do not overeat.
- 5. Enjoy your new beginning. The demons are cleared!

10 oz. water (spring or purified)
2 Tbsp lemon Juice (1/2 lemon)
2 Tbsp genuine grade B maple syrup
Dash of cayenne pepper (or more to taste)
